Hybrid working is here to stay. But what impact is it having on how individuals and groups communicate, innovate, and devise creative solutions? Applying one size fits all solutions, or mandating a return to the office is unlikely to work. But by understanding working dynamics at an individual and group level you can tailor support to those areas of your organisation that need it, maximising the value of hybrid working opportunities for your employees and your company.
With the ever increasing pressures of rapidly changing markets and complex working environments it can be difficult to identify employees who need help before it is too late. But the large emotional cost to employees, and the costs of replacing them is avoidable. By identifying key markers in the lead up to burnout or disengagement patterns before 'notice' is served you can give those employees the support they need, and gain the opportunity to address underlying issues before it disrupts your operations .
Injustices in the workplace can demotivate and lead to the loss of valued employees. It can, however, be difficult to see where, and most importantly how inequalities arise (such as gender pay gaps). By understanding the informal social structures of your organisations and the interplay of decision making and employee interactions, you can gain a deeper understanding of the sources of such injustices and employ strategies to mitigate them for the benefit of your current and future employees.
The way we design our organisations causes a range of informal social structures to emerge, which define how our organisations operate. Sometimes, this can inadvertently lead to 'barriers' and 'information bottlenecks' forming. It can even lead to special positions in your employee networks, which enable individuals to control information flows for their own benefit. Identifying these features and employing strategies to mitigate them can help your employees better achieve their goals.

The Human Network Project
The Human Network Project is a scientific research initiative led by Tom Rose, a doctoral researcher at UCL's Centre for Organisational and Network Analysis. Using cutting edge social network analysis, the project is exploring how human interactions shape how our organisations function and perform. By understanding the complex interplay of interactions and their antecedents, the project aims to offer strategies to help organisations adapt on a 'micro-structural' level, enhancing employee experience, and organisational capability.
A core component of this project is enhancing current 'static' analytical techniques, which give a single snapshot in time, to automating the analytical processes to give you a dynamic 'living' platform to understand your organisation.

Charles has over 20 years of experience as former CEO and Chairman of the MVNO, Pod Group. Through research at WBS he is exploring novel ways of enhancing 'human skills' in the workplace and education
